BushBush. 2022 - ...

Jorden Boulet (born in 1990 in Hasselt, Belgium, where the artist continues to work and reside) is a contemporary painter with a project-oriented practice—examining the idea of paradise in which the paradisical world comes with a twist, juxtaposing happiness, joy, perfection, and freedom with an ambiguous illusion to kitsch, decadence, superficiality and melancholy. The artist is color blind, yet paints distinctively using vividly bold colors, marked by unique contrasts and confident brushstrokes. One encounters an allegory of painting in his ongoing examination of the medium in question, with his abstract écriture of marks and scribbles, breaching the illusion of Vasari’s open window.

Scribbling is something we all do, from infants to seniors. A simple act creates something from nothing, whatever that means; The birth of a new idea, a distraction, a pastime. Mental peace. A frustration? A play between spontaneity and an organized composition. A structured chaos. Jorden Boulet scribbles over images of paradise as if we are not allowed to see them. What does he want to hide? 

Painted palm trees, based on self-made photographs from earthly paradise places, form a basic image over which seemingly spontaneous scribbles have been added. These painted digital additions are anything but spontaneous and break the illusion of a depicted (idyllic) reality. Painting in relation to the digital world as a kind of meta-trompe-l'oeil, in times of (deep) fake news where VR worlds are born from the skies. 

When a scribble suddenly turns out to be very complex, the artist may simply be showing us his love for an almost childish, kitschy or rebellious aesthetic...?

Krabbelen doen we allemaal, van peuter tot senior. Een eenvoudige handeling creëert vanuit het niets iets, wat dat ook moge betekenen; De geboorte van een nieuw idee, een afleiding, een tijdverdrijf. Mentale rust. Een frustratie? Een spel tussen spontaniteit en een georganiseerde compositie. Een gestructureerde chaos. Jorden Boulet kribbelt over beelden van het paradijs alsof we ze niet mogen zien. Wat wil hij verbergen? 

Geschilderde palmbomen, gebaseerd op zelfgemaakte foto’s uit aards paradijselijke gebieden vormen een basisbeeld waarna schijnbaar spontane krabbels overheen gezet zijn. Deze -in verf vertaalde, digitale toevoegingen zijn alles behalve spontaan en doorbreken de illusie van een afgebeelde (idyllische) werkelijkheid. Schilderkunst ten opzichte van de digitale wereld als een soort meta-trompe-l’oeil, in tijden van (deep)fake news waar VR-werelden uit de hemel worden geboren. 

Wanneer een kribbel plots erg complex blijkt te zijn toont de kunstenaar ons misschien gewoonweg zijn liefde voor een bijna kinderachtige, kitscherige of rebelse esthetiek…?
